| How the Nurseries Began |
 |
| When the Eco Trainers program began, one of the challenges was access to good seed stock for the development of kitchen and herb gardens. Most of the seeds used in Bali today are hybrid and genetically modified seeds which are purchased from local Koperasi Unit Desa (KUD) -- government run agricultural supply shops.
SXupported by local farmers with knowledge about traditional seed propagation techniques and Morag Gamble of SEED International, Yayasan IDEP Foundation established its first independent seedling nursery in 2001. Since then, we have established a series of small nurseries in various locations in the Ubud area of Bali.
As part of this program IDEP also developed a series of easy-to-understand seed saving reference materials which are available on this website for free downloading. Please see our downloads section.

| About the Nurseries Today |
|
 |
| Today our nurseries are small-scale, replicable models that supply seedlings for the eco trainers program. We have two locations, one of which is part of an organic gardening program that is supplying organic vegetables to local homes and businesses, and another at the Yayasan IDEP Director’s home.
We encourage the development of similar micro-scale seed saving projects and the strengthening of seed exchange networks through our programs and village workshops.
Eco Trainers welcomes visitors to our nurseries to learn about some simple seed saving and plant propagation techniques. Seed saving workshops can also be arranged. For more information, contact Eco Trainers.
