Bring Back Our Forests - Agro-forestry, Tree-planting, Water Conservation & Education in West Bali (Jembrana) and Central Bali (Gesing).

In August 2011, IDEP began a new campaign to end deforestation in Bali. One project team, led by IDEP's project manager, Sayu Mahayuni, is currently working with close local partners to re-vegetate one of Bali's most deforested jungle areas in Yehembang, West Bali.

The goal of the project is to educate and train community members on agroforestry techniques to sustainably eliminate deforestation and ensure a durable water-source.

IDEP is currently collaborating with 11 farmers from Bangli to produce a variety of local organic seeds (at least 50% from Bali). Also, IDEP assists farmers in sustainable and organic seed production by training farmers and aiding them in the packaging, marketing, and distribution of seeds.

To decrease deforestation, land erosion, forest fires and water shortage issues in Les village, while at the same time increasing environmental conservation, IDEP currently runs a program of revegetating the forest with productive trees.

Understanding the economic and medicinal value of cultivating honeybee farms, IDEP provides training to the local farmers to support them in this alternative livelihood initiative.

IDEP Foundation in partnership with the Bangli State Prison in Bali, is teaching prison inmates the importance of a sustainable agriculture. In June 2010, IDEP built an organic permaculture site at the correction facility. IDEP offers ongoing trainings in gardening, seed saving, and other environmental issues to inmates.

In 2010, IDEP brought project BIRU (biogas installations for communities in Indonesia) to Bali, in collaboration with HIVOS, who first implemented the project in Java.

IDEP has certified over 40 farmers in biogas production, one in each village, and installed reactors in their homes. In each household,  a biogas reactor can produce energy in the form of gas, for cooking up to 6 hours a day or electricity.

To address the environmental issues on Nusa Ceningan, IDEP piloted a project in partnership with community-based disaster management organization, Komunitas Masyarakat Penangulangan Bencana (KMPB) in month year.

One core environmental issue on the island of Nusa Ceningan is waste disposal management. To begin with, there is no waste disposal site on the island. Transporting inorganic waste to neighboring Lembongan island is time-consuming and costly.

After the valuable experienced gained in Padang, West Sumatra, with the Earthquake-safe building campaign, IDEP has accepted a new challenge and has started a new project, in July 2012, that will see the construction of a number of earthquake resistant houses in some of the most disaster prone areas in Bali.

As most of the Indonesian island, Bali is a vulnerable island at high risk of earthquake. Even though the island's popularity has rapidly grown among tourist, infrastructure and housing for the Balinese people currently struggled to keep up.

Since 2000, IDEP has produced education materials, model projects and training programs to increase the eco-literacy and problem-solving skills to Indonesia's school children and their teachers. This 'Learnscapes' program has received multiple commendations from official Governmental Education departments in various provinces in Bali.

IDEP project, “Seed saving and sustainable agriculture as a mean to reduce poverty in Bali” is just started!. This initiative will increase the successful cooperative work with local farmers started about a year ago in the district of Bangli, by adding 10 more farmers to IDEP’s network.

Thanks to this new grant, we have the support to full train local farmers at IDEP Training Centre on sustainable agriculture, waste management, organic food production, seed saving and more. Another step in the struggle against genetic modified seeds and poverty among local farming communities.
