Learning Permaculture In The Midst of Mist – Seed Saving & Sustainable Energy Program in Pedawa

Foggy mid-day, gloomy weather, plus cold air of Asah Gobleg specific characteristics are a suitable circumstances to encourage community productivity effort of Desa Pedawa, Kec. Banjar, Kab. Buleleng to learn about permaculture together.

This familiar kind of scenery is a must check list to see to those who ever visited Bedugul area, Danau Tamblingan, or even those who passed through on the route from Denpasar to Munduk – mist, cold and wet air, and also overlaying veggies field and clusters of clove trees. In the midst of cold weather, ten farmers of Desa Pedawa community group, fired up to learn about permaculture, whilst focusing on seed saving and the application of sustainable energy.

These ten farmers are selected as beneficiaries of ”Seed Saving & Sustainable Energy in North Bali” program, with their dedication to spent their time learning and enhance their knowledge about permaculture, by build a sustainabel homegarden, seed saving, and empowered sustainable energy – biogas from the fermentation of cow manure to support family productivity.

Development of permaculture concept surely necessary for beneficiary community group to be able to increase their capacity – the average of beneficiaries’ livelihoods are clove hodges and construction workers with only Rp. 400.000 of monthly income. So they can improving and developing their own potential to be able to produce self-sufficient food, and also create an independent sustainable alternative livelihood.

These beneficiaries were learning about cycle of life that balanced with nature and applicable to their daily life, by utilizing local wisdom & resources, environmental observation, compost making, integrated pest management, post-harvest management, and seed saving. Moreover, these enthusiastic group also received support development for biogas system installation within their household. They also learnt about the cycle of sustainable energy – from cow manure, into heat energy to cook, and the exes turn into compost (slurry)

Amongst these ten beneficiaries, there are five of them that also received a vocational biogas reactor installation & construction training (those who work as construction workers). However, there are some interest popped up from people in Desa Pedawa area to build cow manure biogas reactor in their own property, just because they already witnessed and heard the sustainable result from these beneficiaries.

This is the fourth time IDEP Foundation in collaboration with The Boeing Company sustaining the goodness of the initiative – putting forward on the concept of sustainability, there are at least 26 assisted local farmers from this program that keep producing local organic open-pollinated seeds and some of them possess the accessibility to sustainable energy facility.

With the problem of exploitative use of chemical for agricultural purpose rampantly exposed in the agricultural area of Danau Tamblingan that causing a severe water pollution, community development assitance that IDEP simultaneously engage with permaculture approach aim to encourage community to engage with alternative livelihood, as well have the effort to preserve and protect their own environment.

On the other hand, this program crucially useful to re-mainstreaming of local seed saving practices to protect locally source food plant varieties – by supporting local farmers to be more creative and self-sufficient. Moreover the use of sustainable alternative energy can provide a better picture on how the nature can be the support system for our life, while we also actively supporting nature preservation.
