Bali’s Pathways to Adapt: A Bondres Series

IDEP, in partnership with Niskala Studio, produced series of educational video about how to prevent the coronavirus spread through clean and healthy behaviour. It is part of the IDEP emergency response to COVID-19 pandemic. The series is called Bali Beradaptasi dalam 8 Episode (Bali Pathways to Adapt in 8 Episodes). It is inspired by “Prevent the COVID-19 spread in 7 Steps” published by WHO.

However, to deliver the message in local and entertaining way, the series is presented in a form of bondres. Bondres itself is one of Balinese mask performing arts that often delivered storyline in comedic way. It’s one of the most Balinese favourite.

In general, the whole 8 episodes depicts the patterns of how people in so many level understand and then should respond to issues such as COVID-19 pandemic particularly. Taken Bali as background, the story tells about how three Balinese deal with the pandemic. The innocent and naive Mang Alex is always being misled by Jongos who always pretend to be the knowledgeable but reckless. Inevitably, the information about COVID-19 he received from Jongos consists of more hoax, misled, and not verified. From that situation, the two brothers begin to engage in conflicts. Luckily, Gek Luweng, their smart and conscientious sister, always arrives at the right time to provide them the valid and verified information from trusted sources.
