IDEP's October 1st 2005 Bali Bombing Response

IDEP's conceptual home and administrative centre is on the island of Bali, so when Bali is hit by disaster IDEP reacts swiftly to the events in our own back yard. On the night of Saturday October 1st, 2005 IDEP received news of the second bombings to hit Bali and immediately swung into action. Within a few hours of the bombing IDEP had implemented the same response as it had after the first Bali Bombing in 2002.

IDEP swiftly established a Crisis Centre with volunteer staffing, computers, faxes and information boards to organize medical and volunteer logistics. Coordination and organization of the Morgue was also being done by IDEP volunteers.

On Sunday morning IDEP staff organized the purchase of urgently needed medical supplies and began the construction of a website for centralizing and publicizing critical information. Within 24 hours the skeleton for the website was complete and data was being prepared for uploading, including information for relatives/friends of victims and the injured, information about volunteer and medical needs. Within 60 hours of the bombing, the website was fully functioning at the address: www.BaliBombOct2005-sanglah.org. IDEP volunteers on the scene photocopied key components of IDEP's CBDM Kit such as missing persons trace forms, volunteer data and FAQs for use at the hospital and the site of the bombing.

It is customary in Indonesia
for families of injured people to camp out at the hospital to provide food and care for patients. After the bombing many family members and friends of the injured victims were sleeping on floors and in corridors at the hospital without pillows or covers and were in need of water and food for themselves.

Once the foreign nationals injured in the bombing had been evacuated from Bali IDEP targeted its efforts on identifying victims in the morgue and assisting the local Indonesian injured and their families.

Due to its high profile as a popular destination for tourists Bali will always be at risk of being targeted by people who wish to cause mayhem and destruction to innocent people and the island’s economy.  IDEP continues to prepare Bali’s communities for disasters both natural and manmade so that when they happen the loss of lives and the damage to livelihoods can be minimized.
