| Background of the Seed Saving & Seed Bank Programs |
 |
| With hybrid and Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) seeds flooding into Indonesia from around the world and new varieties being regularly researched and tested on the ground, a viable alternative to this potentially catastrophic technology is needed.
Multi-national corporations involved in the GMO industry often use biased and misleading promotional materials, and access to clear information about GMOs in the Indonesian language was very difficult to find.
So in 2003, Yayasan IDEP Foundation finalized an 18 month project to develop a comprehensive information packet about GMOs which was distributed to NGOs across Indonesia. This informative kit is also available free of charge from the download IDEP media page on this website. Workshops were held at the village / farmer level and local related government officials were invited.
Having introduced the problem, Yayasan IDEP then introduced the solution -- self managed seed production at the community level.
We have constructed a few small-scale demonstration seedling nurseries in the Ubud, Bali area. These pilots clearly demonstrate simple and effective seed saving techniques and provide examples of techniques for seed saving that can be easily replicated in other areas.

| About Yayasan IDEP’s Seed Saving Information Kit |
|
 |
| Yayasan IDEP, in conjunction with the internationally renowned Seed Saver’s Network, developed a series of culturally appropriate reference materials about techniques for seed saving and seed propagation.
The fact sheets cover the cycles of seed saving (planting, harvesting, cleaning, drying, storing etc) and give an overview of plant structure and pollination processes and why different techniques apply to different types of plants.
A simple comic book that tells the story of a local woman who made the shift from purchasing expensive hybrid seeds to establishing a self sustainable seed supply for her local community.
Related seed saving / seed propagation check list sheets which can be used to keep track of and evaluate the quality of seeds that are being saved by local projects.
These simple and easy-to-understand seed saving publications are available free of charge from the download IDEP media page on this website.

| About Yayasan IDEP Foundation’s Seed Exchange Program |
 |
| The newest component of the Yaysan IDEP Foundation’s seed program is the development of a simple, community-based seed exchange program.
Through our related programs and simple community level workshops, local women are encouraged to grow vegetables, fruits, herbs and medicinal or culturally relevant plants at home and then exchange seedlings and plants with others who are doing the same.
Yaysan IDEP Foundation hopes to be able to expand this program into a wider scale community based seed bank program and is currently seeking support to do so.
