Sukawangi Village Residents Proactively Participate in Disaster Emergency Training: Preparation for the Earthquake Simulation in Cianjur

The IDEP Selaras Alam Foundation (IDEP) organized Disaster Emergency Response Training (PTDB) for residents affected by the Cianjur Earthquake last November. The training occurred on Monday, September 11th, and concluded on Thursday, September 14th, 2023, at the Sehati Sports Center, Sukawangi Village Office, Warungkondang District, Cianjur Regency, West Java. This training is expected to help residents recover after being struck by an earthquake and simultaneously build their independent preparedness to reduce the risk in case of another disaster.

After conducting the Socialization of Disaster-Resilient Village Formation (DESTANA) activities on August 8th, 2023, and continuing with the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (F-PRB) from August 22nd to 29th, 2023, IDEP is committed to continuing its proactive approach in building community resilience and disaster risk mitigation in the village.

“After conducting the Socialization of Disaster-Resilient Village Formation (DESTANA) training last month, the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) activities are essential in complementing our understanding of disaster preparedness and risk mitigation. Therefore, at the end of the activities, we conducted an earthquake simulation with the residents,” said IDEP Program Coordinator Putu Suryawan.

This training was attended by 60 residents from 29 RT (neighborhood units). Most of them are actively involved in guiding residents during earthquakes. This means the residents showed enthusiasm during the three-hour training sessions each day.

The series of disaster emergency response training that lasted for four days will be completed with a Tabletop Exercise on August 27th. This activity is expected to involve around 40 volunteers and 20 F-PRB members from the local 29 RT. This way, it is hoped that the residents will become accustomed and trained to reduce the risk of casualties in case of an earthquake, especially considering that housing in some locations is densely populated. Thus, if another earthquake occurs, no residents will be isolated. By conducting this activity in Sukawangi Village, disaster mitigation can become one of the best practices other vulnerable locations can adopt.

The training series held throughout the program, which will conclude in September this year, is an effort to support residents with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed for effective recovery. By focusing on resilience, sustainability, and community empowerment, the collaboration between IDEP, Sukawangi Village residents, and various other parties is expected to leave a lasting impact, allowing Cianjur to rise stronger and more resilient than before.

Residents’ involvement during first aid practice

The disaster emergency response training series that lasted for four days will be completed with an earthquake simulation on August 27th. This activity is planned to involve around 200 residents from three local RTs. This way, it is hoped that the residents will become accustomed and trained to reduce the risk of casualties in case of an earthquake, especially considering that housing in some locations is densely populated. Additionally, difficult road access temporarily isolated residents after the earthquake. By starting this initiative in Tunagan Hamlet, disaster mitigation through KMPB can become one of the best practices that Wangunjaya Village and other vulnerable locations can adopt.

The training series held throughout the program, which will conclude in December this year, is an effort to support residents with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed for effective recovery. By focusing on resilience, sustainability, and community empowerment, the collaboration between IDEP and KUN+ is expected to leave a lasting impact, allowing Cianjur to rise stronger and more resilient than before.
