Earthquake-Safe Building

After the valuable experienced gained in Padang, West Sumatra, with the Earthquake-safe building campaign, IDEP has accepted a new challenge and has started a new project, in July 2012, that will see the construction of a number of earthquake resistant houses in some of the most disaster prone areas in Bali.

As most of the Indonesian island, Bali is a vulnerable island at high risk of earthquake. Even though the island's popularity has rapidly grown among tourist, infrastructure and housing for the Balinese people currently struggled to keep up.

With the support PT HM Sampoerna Tbk.  and Philip Morris International, IDEP intend to develop a module for the construction of Earthquake Resistant Houses in the earthquake prone districts of Karangasem and Buleleng, that can be adopted as a model to be replicated in a larger community in other disaster prone areas of Bali.  At the same time, IDEP will develop a awareness campaign among the local communities about the importance of building safe houses.

The project aims to build safer and healthier houses for disadvantaged families living in rural areas in Bali that are at high risk of earthquake, and at the same time, away from tourists sight. On top of that, the project is also intended to increase capacity building for the local communities through trainings on safe house building and sustainable agriculture.

Several family with very low income will acquire agriculture skills and develop an organic garden beside their newly built earthquake resistant house.
