The magic of mangroves

Mangrove forests are important habitat for fish and they also help protect coastal communities from land erosion, floods and tsunamis. Despite this, mangrove forests in Indonesia are being destroyed at an alarming rate. In fact, 71 percent of Indonesian mangrove forests have already been damaged [1].

The quest to plant over 100,000 trees

In 2012, IDEP Foundation began a program in partnership with Phillip Morris to train local coastal communities on the importance of mangroves for their local fishing industry and disaster risk management. We began last year in Surabaya, Java, where rapid development along the coastal has wiped out mangroves at a horrific rate.

Together with the locals, we successfully planted 70,000 mangrove seedlings.

This year, we are expanding the program to more Indonesian communities. We are incorporating other tree plantations in areas affected by extensive land clearing.

What we are doing, where

Surabaya, Java:  Building a mangrove nursery and mangrove information centre, training local communities and planting 100,000 mangroves.
Lampung, Sumatra: This year we are creating a seedling nursery, training locals and planting a further 3000 trees on top of the 3500 planted last year.
Sulawesi, Makassar: This year we are creating a seedling nursery, training locals and planting a further 3000 trees on top of the 3500 planted last year.
Lumajang, East Timor: Creating a seedling nursery and planting 3000 trees.
Probolinggo, East Java: Planting 3000 trees.
Bandar Lampung, Sumatra: Creating a seedling nursery and planting 3000 trees.
Palembang, South Sumatra: Creating a seedling nursery and planting 3000 trees.
East Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat: Creating a seedling nursery and planting 30,000 bamboo trees.
